Technology-based interventions to promote physical activity in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries: a scoping review protocol

Introduction Physical inactivity is considered a major public health burden and remains highly prevalent across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries despite the rapid digital transformation and investment in health information infrastructure. Although technology-based interventions have emerged as promising approaches to promote physical activity, their implementation and impact are still unclear. This scoping review will map technology-based interventions that promote physical activity in the GCC against the domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to…

Safety and preliminary efficacy of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSC) for painful lumbar facet arthropathy: study protocol for a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover phase II clinical trial

Background Lumbar facet arthropathy (LFA) is a degenerative, arthritic joint disorder and a common specific cause of axial low back pain and functional impairment. Currently, no disease-modifying therapies are available for symptomatic LFA. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC)-based therapy represents an emerging regenerative treatment modality with the promise to target the underlying pathophysiology of LFA. Despite encouraging clinical evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of MSC therapy in other osteoarthritis, its therapeutic utility in LFA remains largely unexplored. We recently…

Challenging behaviour by patients or close contacts, as experienced by healthcare workers in adult general and university hospital care: a scoping review protocol

Introduction Healthcare professionals in general and academic hospitals increasingly face challenging behaviour from patients and their close contacts, particularly in acute care settings. Ranging from aggression to socially inappropriate actions, such behaviour is understood as interactional and context-dependent. Yet research largely focuses on verbal and physical aggression, leaving other forms and hospital context underexplored, despite concerns about staff safety, workforce sustainability and care quality. Methods and analysis This scoping review aims to map literature on challenging…

Protocol for BASE: a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, controlled trial of bupropion hydrochloride in acute ischaemic stroke in China

Introduction Stroke remains a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide, with an urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies to improve recovery. Bupropion hydrochloride, a norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor, may promote motor and cognitive recovery due to its unique mechanism of action. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of early adjunctive treatment with bupropion hydrochloride versus placebo on functional recovery in patients with acute ischaemic stroke. Methods and analysis BASE is an investigator-initiated, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled…

Enhanced home-based transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) for depression comorbid with borderline personality disorder (BPD): study protocol for a pilot double-blinded randomised controlled trial (TENTADIS)

Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common comorbidity among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), affecting over 85% of patients and leading to high recurrence rates and resistance to treatment. Traditional pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions often show limited efficacy in this population, highlighting the need for innovative treatment strategies. Emerging evidence suggests that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of both MDD and BPD. In addition, non-invasive brain stimulation…

Strategies and enabling conditions for strengthening older adults involvement as active research partners: protocol for a sequential mixed-methods study in Sweden

Introduction Older adults are increasingly recognised as valuable contributors in health and social care research, yet their involvement as active research partners remains inconsistent and under-theorised across contexts. The aim of this study is to investigate how older adults are involved as active research partners in health and social care research and to build consensus on strategies and enabling conditions that can support and strengthen such involvement. Methods and analysis This study uses a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design comprising three phases. In the preparatory phase…

Mental health help-seeking among young people with out-of-home care experience: a mixed-methods systematic review and meta-analysis protocol

Introduction Out-of-home care experienced young people have elevated mental health needs, yet their mental health help-seeking remains insufficiently understood. Understanding help-seeking is critical for identifying barriers and facilitators that shape whether, how and from whom care-experienced young people seek and access mental health support. Existing syntheses are limited in scope and have under-represented quantitative evidence, residential care, care leavers and equity-relevant subgroups. This review will synthesise international evidence on sources, barriers and facilitators of mental…

Diaphragmatic speckle-tracking ultrasound for predicting successful liberation from mechanical ventilation: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol

Introduction Ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction is increasingly recognised as an important complication of prolonged mechanical ventilation (MV) and a major contributor to difficult weaning and extubation failure. Although bedside diaphragmatic ultrasound has emerged as a useful tool for assessing diaphragm function, conventional indices such as diaphragm excursion and thickening fraction may be influenced by ventilatory mechanics and patient effort. Speckle-tracking ultrasound (STU), a deformation-based technique adapted from echocardiography, allows assessment of diaphragmatic…

How equity is operationalised in learning health systems: a scoping review protocol

Introduction Learning health systems (LHS) aim to improve care through repeated cycles that link data, learning and action. These systems have a goal to uphold equity through purposefully including patients and other stakeholders in co-design and using real-world data to identify and respond to inequities. However, evidence shows that LHS do not automatically produce equitable outcomes, and a gap persists between stated equity goals and the practical mechanisms used to build equity into system design, measurement and decision-making. This scoping review examines how equity and related…

Respiratory syncytial virus infection in COPD exacerbations: the RECODE study protocol

Introduction Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often suffer episodes of exacerbation (ECOPD). Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an increasingly recognised cause of illness in adults. Yet the prevalence of RSV during ECOPD and its association with clinically relevant outcomes remain insufficiently defined. The RECODE study sought to determine the prevalence of RSV infection in patients with ECOPD and to assess the association between RSV and hospitalisation, length of stay, acute cardiovascular events and/or death. Methods and analysis Prospective, multicentre…
